I am Dr. Hesam Bazargan Harandi, recently completed my first postdoctoral tenure at the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. I obtained my Ph.D. in Power Machinery and Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) from Wuhan University of Technology in China in November 2021. Prior to that, I obtained my MSc. and BSc. in Mechanical Engineering-Energy Conversion from Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman in Iran in 2016 and 2014, respectively.
In short, my main positive attributes are as follows:
#High ability in conducting high-level research in the fields of transport in porous media, membranes, water, energy, desalination and water treatment, etc. #Demonstrated experience in preparing and writing research proposals to raise external research funding (more than five academic and industrial proposals for international funds). #A history of publishing in top-tier journals within the relevant fields (more than 20 papers in high-ranked journals). #Solid background in various numerical simulation techniques at various scales (microscopic, mesoscopic, macroscopic) and various modelling approaches such as Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs). Ability to work with different modelling software and programming languages. #Ability to work independently as well as part of a team and with experience supervising MSc. And Ph.D. students. #Extensive teaching experience in various academic courses, e.g., Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Statics, Air Conditioning and Cooling Systems, Vehicle Air Conditioning and Heating Systems, at prestigious universities in both Iran and China. #Extensive experience in serving as a guest editor for various special issues and peer-reviewing papers as an invited reviewer.
Over the past decade, my research has focused on various aspects of desalination (thermal-based and membrane-based)/separation technologies, electrochemical systems such as PEMFC as well as Electrodialysis (ED), renewable energy systems, and hybrid sustainable processes. Specifically, my work has centred on the modelling and simulation of membrane-based desalination/separation technologies at different levels from phenomenological (microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic scales) to system dynamics, with a particular emphasis on the transport of flow through the membranes and membrane modification to enhance performance. Recently, I've begun employing physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to model phenomena like fouling and scaling in desalination systems. During my latest position as a postdoctoral researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), I have been working on the optimal desalination processes of high TDS brines extracted from deep saline aquifers in CO2-enhanced water recovery (CO2-EWR) process to not only manage the reservoir pressure but also produce freshwater for the industrial applications. Also, as fouling/scaling significantly impacts the performance of membrane-based separation techniques, I have been concentrating on various strategies to mitigate scaling and fouling. In addition to employing corrugated membranes to tackle fouling, my research extends to the fabrication of innovative membrane types such as Janus membranes, CNT-coated membranes, and MXene membranes. Simultaneously, I explore the incorporation of micro/nanobubbles into the feed stream as a strategy to alleviate fouling and scaling in membrane-based separation technologies. Furthermore, my focus encompasses developing a green process that integrates power generation, gas/liquid separation, and the crystallization of valuable materials.
Throughout my career, I have published extensively over 20 in high-ranked journals/conferences and have one patent granted by the China intellectual property adminstration. In addition to serving as a guest editor for special issues and reviewing papers for several journals, I have had the privilege of teaching at universities in both Iran and China. At Piam Nour University in Iran and Wuhan University of Technology in China, I instructed a variety of courses for both undergraduate and graduate students.
